How to Make a Meme with AI: Your Own Picture, 5 Free Caption Ideas, or a Meme from Just an Idea

Top text and bottom text on a corgi, a tweet-style caption over a cat, a demotivator with a sunset — all free. Then we turned a three-word idea into a picture.

You know the feeling: the picture is perfect, the group chat is waiting, and the caption just won't come. Or the joke is ready in your head, but there's no picture for it, and by the time you've found one and wrestled with an editor, the moment has passed.

The Meme Generator on ImageGPT covers both cases. Putting your own text on your own picture is free. Asking AI for caption ideas for that picture is free too. And when you only have an idea, AI draws a picture for it for 6 credits.

What it does

  • My picture — any photo, screenshot, video frame or image from your phone.
  • Three layouts. Classic: white capitals with a black outline at the top and bottom, the old-school top text / bottom text look. Text above: black text on a white band over the picture, the way memes look when they're shared as posts. Demotivator: the picture in a black frame with a big title and a smaller line underneath, like a parody motivational poster.
  • Suggest 5 captions — AI looks at your picture and writes five different jokes. You can give it a topic: work, school, gym, Mondays.
  • AI picture — describe an idea, GPT Image 2.5 draws a scene for the joke, and you get five captions with it.
  • In Classic, drag the captions around, add extra text boxes, and switch CAPS or dark text on or off. The text size slider works in every layout.
  • Download meme — free, no watermark.

Example: your picture, AI captions

We uploaded a photo of a corgi on a lawn, picked Classic and hit Suggest 5 captions. If the text fields are empty, the first caption goes straight onto the picture and the rest show up as a list — tap any of them to swap it in. We did the same with a cat on a windowsill in the Text above layout, and turned a woman on a seaside cliff into a demotivator by giving AI the topic "Monday".

A smiling corgi on a lawn captioned "Me after saying I'll be productive today / I moved from the couch to the yard"
Classic
A tabby cat on a windowsill under the caption "The delivery tracker says one stop away. I've been at the window for 40 minutes"
Text above
A woman on a seaside cliff in a black frame, captioned "The ocean said to go with the flow / My calendar said absolutely not"

What makes a good meme picture

  • A clear emotion or situation: a face, a pose, a pet doing something, an awkward moment. The simpler the shot, the sharper the jokes.
  • For Classic, some room at the top and bottom so the text doesn't cover the good part. No room? Use Text above and the caption moves onto a white band.
  • A topic if you want jokes about something specific: "working from home", "finals week", "group projects".
  • For an AI picture you don't need a picture at all — just a sentence or two about the situation.

How to make a meme from your own picture

  1. Open the Meme Generator and keep My picture selected.
  2. Upload a photo, a screenshot or any image.
  3. Pick a layout: Classic, Text above or Demotivator.
  4. Type your text into the two fields — top and bottom text in Classic, a title and a caption in Demotivator. Or type a topic and click Suggest 5 captions.
  5. Move the text and adjust the size. In Classic, + Text adds another text box.
  6. Click Download meme.

A meme from just an idea

Switch to AI picture and describe the situation in up to 300 characters. AI comes up with a scene, GPT Image 2.5 draws it, and five captions appear under the field, with the first one already on the picture. The picture itself is drawn without any text and with calm space at the top and bottom, so you can rewrite the caption as many times as you like — you pay once, for the picture.

We typed "cat vs Monday" and got a tabby cat pawing an alarm clock off a desk next to a laptop and a work bag. We wrote the caption on that one ourselves. For "just one more episode at 1 am", AI made both the picture and the caption.

Meme ideas to try

Describe a situation everyone recognizes rather than a finished joke — AI will find the twist. The people in these pictures are always made up: AI doesn't draw real or famous people.

What AI won't do

Captions and pictures follow a few simple rules: no jokes about anyone's looks, age, ethnicity, religion, gender or disability, no profanity, no cruelty, nothing sexual. AI won't caption pictures of well-known politicians, explicit or graphic images. It won't draw ideas that mock politicians or public figures or target a group of people — you'll see a message instead, and a refused idea costs nothing.

Pricing

Adding text, choosing a layout, getting captions for your own picture (up to 30 requests a day) and downloading are all free. Credits are only used for an AI picture: 6 credits per picture, five captions included. If the picture fails, the credits come back automatically. New accounts get 6 free credits.

Upload a picture or describe an idea and download your meme.
