Every colorwork sweater, hat or blanket starts with a chart, and graphing your own picture square by square takes ages — whether it's your dog's face, a team logo, a name or a motif. This generator charts any picture for free, right in your browser.

For knitting, set the width in stitches and your gauge: stitches and rows per 4 in (10 cm). Knit stitches are wider than they are tall, so a chart drawn on square cells comes out squashed; the generator works out the number of rows so the picture keeps its proportions, and shows the approximate finished size. Choose 2 to 8 colors — two to four is typical for stranded colorwork.

For crochet there are two modes on a square grid: tapestry crochet and C2C (corner to corner). For C2C the PDF adds a written pattern for every diagonal row — which way to work it and how many tiles of each color, like "3 A, 2 B".

On the chart the main color is left blank and the others get symbols; rows are numbered from the bottom and stitches from right to left, the way charts are read while knitting. The PDF comes on US Letter or A4 with a key and a stitch count for every color. Simple pictures with bold shapes and strong contrast chart best.

Knitting chart FAQ

How do I make a knitting chart from a picture?+

Upload a picture, choose a technique — knitting, tapestry crochet or C2C — plus the width and number of colors, and click Create chart. Download the PDF with the chart and key.

Why does gauge matter?+

A knit stitch is wider than a row is tall, so a chart on square cells knits up squashed. Knit a swatch, count stitches and rows over 4 in (10 cm) and enter them — the generator adjusts the number of rows so your motif keeps its shape and shows the finished size.

How do I read the C2C pattern?+

C2C starts in the bottom-right corner and works in diagonal rows. The PDF lists every row with its direction and how many tiles of each color to make, for example "3 A, 2 B". The color letters are in the key.

What pictures work best?+

Simple ones: bold shapes, little fine detail and strong contrast. Crop busy photos first or choose fewer colors. Two to four colors is plenty for most stranded colorwork.

Does it estimate yarn amounts?+

No — the key gives the stitch count for every color. Yardage depends on your yarn and tension, so estimate it from your swatch.

How much does it cost?+

Nothing — the chart is built in your browser and you can download the PDF as often as you like. Signing up adds 6 credits for our paid tools.
