A pattern made from your own photo — your pet, your house, a wedding portrait, a bunch of flowers — turns a stitching project into a one-of-a-kind gift. This maker builds the chart right in your browser at no cost, so you can try different widths and color counts until it looks the way you want.

Set the width in stitches (30 to 300) and the fabric — 11, 14, 16 or 18 count Aida — and you'll see the finished size in inches and centimeters right away. Colors are matched to 489 DMC floss shades, from 8 up to 48 per pattern. Lonely single stitches are cleaned up so you're not starting and stopping for one cross. Optionally, turn on dithering for smoother gradients, leave a plain background unstitched, or add a backstitch outline in DMC 3371.

Missing a shade in your stash? Click a color in the key and pick a close DMC alternative — the chart rebuilds instantly. The key lists the symbol, DMC number and name, stitch count and an estimated number of skeins for every color.

The PDF is laid out on US Letter or A4: an overview with a preview and a page map, the key, and the chart itself with a 10-stitch grid, running row and column numbers, center arrows and two repeated rows where pages meet. Print it in color or as symbols only for a black-and-white printer.

Cross stitch pattern FAQ

How do I turn a photo into a cross stitch pattern?+

Upload a photo, set the width in stitches, the fabric count and the number of colors, then click Create pattern. A preview and a DMC color key appear in a couple of seconds. Click Download PDF to get the chart split into printable pages.

What size should my pattern be?+

It depends on the width in stitches and the fabric: on 14 count Aida, 100 stitches is about 7.1 in (18 cm). Portraits look best at 120–200 stitches; simple pictures are fine at 40–80. The finished size updates as you change the settings.

Where do the DMC numbers come from?+

Colors are matched to 489 DMC floss shades using the open craft-color-codes table by MakeBead (CC BY 4.0). Screen colors are approximate, so check a DMC color card before you buy.

How are skeins estimated?+

From the number of stitches in each color, the fabric count and the strands used (3 on 11 count, 2 on the others), with a little extra for waste. It's an estimate — your own usage may differ.

Can I print it on a black-and-white printer?+

Yes. Every color has its own symbol, and the symbols differ by shape, not just by color. Choose B/W symbols before downloading the PDF.

How much does it cost?+

Nothing — the pattern is built in your browser and you can download the PDF as many times as you like. Signing up adds 6 credits for our paid tools, such as the coloring page generator.
